Where to stay in Sicily? Let’s dive into the guide.
Best areas in Sicily

Sicily is a big island, so this guide is a bit lengthy. I recommend having a cup of coffee and reading the individual areas, but if you’re in a hurry and want to know the most important facts, you can find them here.
Here are the best areas for a stay in Sicily:
- 👉 Taormina – best area for luxury hotels and beautiful surroundings
- 👉 Cefalù – best area for families with children (cozy town with a great beach)
- 👉 Catania – Exciting city with a beach near Mount Etna

The guide to accommodation in Sicily continues below.
1. Taormina – where you will find luxury and beautiful surroundings
Taormina is a town that evokes a feeling of warmth and enthusiasm in everyone who has visited it.
It is a real gem on the east coast of Sicily and offers breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna, one of Sicily’s most famous sights, from every corner.

One of the reasons why I always recommend Taormina as a starting point for Sicily is the fantastic historical sites and the very cozy atmosphere.
In the city there is a well-preserved ancient Greek theater, the fascinating Isola Bella archaeological park and the medieval Castello di Taormina – all of which are a must-see.
Here you can find the best hotels in Taormina. 👈

Taormina is a charming town with narrow, cobbled streets full of small stores and cozy cafés. Here you can go exploring, discover local treasures and enjoy a real Italian espresso.
If you get hungry, visit the local restaurants and enjoy the delicious Sicilian dishes that I love to eat.

And of course there are beaches! Taormina is surrounded by crystal clear waters and beautiful beaches where you can relax and enjoy the sun.
Spiaggia di Isola Bella and Lido La Pigna are both beaches near the town of Taormina.
If you’re looking for the best beaches in Sicily, Taormina is not the place to stay – I’ll cover other areas with better beaches later in this guide.
You should stay in Taormina because it is a beautiful town, with cozy streets, cafés and restaurants on every corner and a unique, welcoming atmosphere.
- Breathtaking views of the coast and the Ionian Sea
- Ancient Greek theater and other historical sights
- Lively cafés and stores in the charming old town
Best places to stay in Taormina
The city of Taormina and its surroundings are known to travelers worldwide. It became even more famous thanks to one of the best TV series of 2022: “The White Lotus”.
So if you’ve also seen season 2 of White Lotus, you’ll already know Taormina – the series was filmed at the Four Seasons Hotel in Taormina.
The hotel is also called 👉 San Domenico Palace.

So if you’re dreaming of staying at the White Lotus Hotel in Sicily, you should book yourself into the Four Seasons in Taormina, but it’s not a cheap experience.

The price is high, and I think most of my readers would prefer to stay at a cheaper place.
In this case, the 👉 Hotel Ariston & Palazzo Santa Caterina could be a good choice.

The 4-star hotel is in a prime location, roughly halfway between the city center and Isola Bella beach.
The hotel has its own pool and restaurant, making it a good choice for those who want to stay in Taormina without breaking the bank.
The following hotel is also located in the heart of Taormina, with the mountains in the background and a view of the sea.

The 👉 Hotel Continental is located right in the picturesque town on the east coast of Sicily, from where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the coast and the impressive Teatro Antico.
This cozy 4-star hotel offers stylish rooms and delicious Sicilian cuisine. Thanks to its prime location, it is easy to explore both the beaches and the sights of the surrounding area.
2. Cefalú – Best area for families
Cefalù is one of the best places to stay in Sicily.

Catania is often at the top of the list of cities that travelers want to explore in Sicily – and for good reason.
This lively and vibrant city lies at the foot of Mount Etna and is the perfect starting point to discover some of Sicily’s best sights.

One of the reasons why I always recommend Catania is its unique cultural and historical heritage. The city’s baroque architecture, such as the iconic Piazza del Duomo and the cathedral, leaves a strong impression.
It’s a great experience to stroll through the lively streets of the city and discover new things, from local markets to small art galleries.
Here you will find the best hotels in Catania. 👈

The city is full of energy and there is always something to do, no matter what time of year you visit.

It is especially a good idea to stay in Palermo if you are traveling to Sicily outside the high season.
If I were to travel to Sicily in July, I wouldn’t stay in the city center as it can get humid there.
You would probably prefer to live closer to the beaches – or in the northern part of Palermo (in the city/district of Mondello), where you will find Mondello beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Sicily.

When is the best time to travel to Sicily?
The best time to visit Sicily depends on your preferences and what you want to experience on the island. In general, spring and fall are the most popular times to visit Sicily, as the climate is mild and there are fewer tourists than in the summer months.
Here is an overview of what you can expect all year round:
Spring (March to June): Spring is a fantastic time to visit Sicily as the weather is pleasant and warm, with daytime temperatures between 15 and 25 °C. Flowering plants and lush landscapes make this an ideal time for hiking and sightseeing. Spring is also an excellent time to avoid the large crowds of tourists that arrive in the summer months.
Summer (June to September): Summers in Sicily are hot and sunny, with daytime temperatures often exceeding 30°C. This is the most popular time for sun and beach lovers to visit the island. Be aware, however, that tourist numbers are higher at this time and it can get very crowded in some places. If you don’t mind the heat and the crowds, summer is a great time to enjoy Sicily’s beaches and festivals.
Autumn (September to November): Autumn is another ideal time to visit Sicily, as the weather is still warm and pleasant, with daytime temperatures between 20 and 25 °C. The colors of the landscape change and the vineyards are harvested, making it a great time for wine tasting and culinary experiences. Like spring, fall is also a good time to avoid the big tourist crowds.
Winter (December to February): Winters in Sicily are mild compared to most other European countries, with daytime temperatures between 10 and 15 °C. Although this is not the best time for beach activities, it is a great time to explore the island’s historical sites, culture and cuisine without large crowds. Winter is also a good time to visit Mount Etna and see snow and maybe even go skiing.
All in all, spring and autumn are the best times to visit Sicily to enjoy the island’s natural beauty, culture and less crowded attractions.
Which areas should you avoid in Sicily?
Sicily is an incredible island with so much to see and do. But as with any other destination, there are a few places you might want to avoid when you visit. But don’t stress – most areas are beautiful and safe. Here’s a quick heads up:
1. Some neighborhoods: In cities like Palermo and Catania, there are some areas that can be a little rough. For example, avoid the Ballarò and Capo markets in Palermo after dark as it can get a bit confusing. In Catania, some parts of the city centre can be a little dodgy. Use common sense and stick to well-lit, tourist-friendly areas.
2. Crowded tourist resorts: Even if you want to visit some of Sicily’s famous attractions, you should bear in mind that they can be very crowded in high season. To make the most of your trip, visit these hotspots outside the peak season or opt for less touristy alternatives.
3. Remote areas after dark: Sicily has stunning nature and rural landscapes to offer, but hiking through remote areas after dark might not be the best idea. Stick to familiar paths and trails when exploring the great outdoors and try to finish your adventures before dark.
That’s all there is to it. Remember to use common sense, pay attention to your surroundings and trust your instincts. You’re sure to have a fantastic time exploring the wonders of Sicily.
